An Environmentally Friendly Building to Help Feed the Hungry

Food Bank of Central New York's distribution center is designed to meet the needs of feeding the hungry in our eleven county service area while minimizing our carbon footprint. The overall 74,000 square foot building provides an expansive warehouse for the acquisition and distribution of food as well as amenities to assist with food safety and nutrition education training.

The two-story, 13,000 square foot office area of the Food Bank’s distribution center, designed by VIP Structures, Inc., features employee offices along the exterior of the building to capture natural light for each office, a state of the art training and demonstration kitchen for nutrition education enhanced with day-lighting via Solatubes, and three meeting spaces with audio visual equipment to provide the latest in presentation ability.

The furnishings are manufactured by Global Total Office and supplied by Just the Right Stuff. Global's line of seating and furnishings are in compliance with stringent emission guidelines set out by Greenguard Environmental Institute under the standards for low emitting products and materials.

The 61,000 square foot warehouse houses a glycol refrigeration and freezer system for storing perishables and frozen food items. The freezer and cooler are comprised of 25,000 square feet that provides segmented space for storing perishables and frozen items.

The building’s heating and cooling needs are powered by ten geo-thermal wells, designed to create efficient cooling and heating by using less energy to maintain temperatures. We are proud to be the first food bank across the Feeding America network to use a geothermal system for HVAC operations.
