FINGER LAKES WINERIES DONATE $15,253.16 TO REGIONAL FOOD BANKS

Corning, NY (June 7, 2013) -- On May 11, 2013, Finger Lakes Wine Country celebrated National Wine Tourism Day. Thirty three wineries from across Finger Lakes Wine Country participated in this inaugural event.

In total, the wineries of the Finger Lakes collected and are donating $15,253.16 to fight hunger in our region. Each winery’s donation has been earmarked to stay in their respective county by their regional Food Bank.

Corning, NY (April 30, 2012) -- The first-ever Wine Tourism Day taking place on May 11th throughout North America promises to be a day full of excitement, celebrating not only the importance of wine tourism, but the enjoyment it holds.  In Finger Lakes Wine Country, Wine Tourism Day is an attractive addition to the month long celebration of Finger Lakes wine, Finger Lakes Wine Month, which takes place annually in May.

On May 11th, participating wineries across the four-county region will donate their tasting fees or a portion of their wine sales collected that day to one of three regional food banks assigned to their respective locations. Finger Lakes Wine Country is partnering with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, FoodLink, and the Food Bank of Central New York for this event. Wine Tourism Day is not just a celebration of wine tourism, but a celebration of the togetherness felt throughout the communities encompassing Finger Lakes Wine Country.  The region will share in the joy of giving back as the donations collected will stay local.

“We are thrilled to partner with Finger Lakes Wine Country and of all the generous wineries that support our local hunger relief efforts,” stated Kathleen Stress, Chief Operating Officer of the Food Bank of CNY.  “Hunger exists locally and to have this recognized by our winery partners is a way to create awareness of food insecurity while encouraging the support of Finger Lakes wineries and regional food bank.”

In addition to charity, the other key, and most obvious, component of Wine Tourism Day in Wine Country is wine. Among wine tastings, many participating wineries will offer wine and food pairings throughout the day. Some wineries are offering visitors educational experiences. Whether it is a wine-making lesson from the winemaker or a detailed tour of the cellar or vineyards, the opportunity to learn something new is endless.
