Just Say Yes to Fruits & Vegetables
Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables (JSY) is a nutrition education initiative designed to encourage consumption of fruits and vegetables, prevent overweight/obesity, reduce long-term chronic disease risks, and create healthy habits among individuals eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP – formerly food stamps). The program receives federal funding through USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Nutrition Education (SNAP-Ed) project, with local funds from the New York State Department of Health's Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP).
Through nutrition education workshops and cooking demonstrations, JSY works to ensure low-income families in New York eat nutritious foods, make the most of their food budgets and prepare foods in a safe manner. Each workshop provides practical nutrition information using USDA approved lesson plans, recipes and cooking demonstrations using fruits and vegetables.
JSY is a collaboration between the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) and Emergency Food Relief Organizations. Led by eight regional Food Banks, a statewide network of nutritionists deliver comprehensive nutrition education activities across NYS, focusing their efforts primarily in food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens.
Food Bank of Central New York is excited to offer JSY workshops to our partner agencies. The topics for the nutrition workshops vary, ranging from Healthy Meal Planning to the Benefits of Fiber. The workshops will be conducted by Food Bank registered dietitians Amy Wilson MPH, RD, CDN and Lauren Nickerson MS, RD, CDN. On-going classes will be scheduled throughout the year and a calendar of events can be viewed on the JSY website.
