September is Hunger Action Month

September is Hunger Action Month across the United States and right here in Central New York. Hunger Action Month is a public call to action on behalf of the increasing number of people in need of food assistance across the country. In the Food Bank's eleven county service area of central and northern New York: 1 in 6 people are food insecure - meaning that they do not know where their next meal will come from, 30% of emergency food recipients are children under the age of 18 and 42% of emergency food recipients have had to make the decision between purchasing food and paying for their mortgage, rent or utilities.

Here are some easy ways to take action:

  • Brown Bag Your Lunch - Instead of purchasing your lunch in the cafeteria or at a local restaurant, brown bag it! Then donate what you would typically spend on lunch to the Food Bank.
  • Share our Status - Show your support of the Food Bank to your friends and family by sharing our Facebook status updates and tweets during the month.
  • View our 30 Ways in 30 Days calendar for ideas on how you can partner with Food Bank of Central New York to help fight hunger.
